I’m not normally a sashimi fan (I like sushi rice so I always choose sushi over sashimi), so me giving five stars to a purely sashimi restaurant is saying a lot.
Nikai is located discreetly on the first floor of a shop lot, above Lao Jiu Lou, the ramen restaurant belonging to the same owner (who also owns the more famous Sanuki Udon a few lots down). It’s slightly more upscale than the other two, as it serves super fresh sashimi and is a sake bar as well. According to the head waiter, the owner has always wanted to open such a place, so it’s no surprise that he’s done his best to make the fare outstanding.
Almost everything on the menu is in Japanese, so we had to ask the head waiter for his recommendation. We ordered the standard set which consists of 5 appetisers, 5 sashimi, 1 fried dish, and sashimi rice. All this for RM55!
Needless to repeat, everything was fantastic. They bring fresh fish in twice a week, so the sashimi is different all the time. I’m not a fan of squid, but I decided to try it since it was on my plate (and the head waiter was watching and teaching us exactly how to enjoy the sashimi the Japanese way). Well, I’m still not a fan of squid, but as it didn’t taste like squid, I finished the whole thing without pulling a face 😛
Long story short, just try this restaurant if you like sashimi. I have no doubt that the sake is going to be a fine experience too.
You can find Nikai at 25A Jalan Bukit Desa 5, Taman Bukit Desa, 58100 Kuala Lumpur.
